Dick Duerrstein Witch Hazel

Signed by Dick Duerrstein Witch Hazel

A Chuck Jones Homage Edition by Dick Duerrstein ~

Witch Hazel by Los Angeles native Dick Duerrstein is an evocative and delightful exploration of an original drawing by her creator, Chuck Jones. Working with drawings gathered from the archives of Chuck Jones, he has re-interpreted the sauciness and droll draftsmanship of one of the most iconic animation directors and character creators of the last century. Duerrstein has the innate ability to capture the essence of the character while playfully (and respectfully) reinventing the energy of the original. His homage to what has come before coupled with his flair for the future brings a fusion of the art historical with the Pop Art sensibilities of today.

A cartoon character named Witch Hazel first appeared in the Disney short film, "Trick or Treat" of 1952. It wasn't until 1954, in the Jones directed "Bewitched Bunny," that we see the Witch Hazel of our dreams. Despite their common name, Jones' Witch Hazel is a much different witch than her Disney namesake. (Which witch is which?) Jones, in a flourish of what would now be called post-modern design, gave Witch Hazel a decidedly more stylized look, with green-skinned body (Wicked Witch of the West), skinny legs and pointy shoes that seem to barely keep the barrell-like body from collapsing in a heap of dusty hat and hairpins.

Duerrstein has always drawn. His passion for art led him to his first job as art director for Walt Disney Consumer Products that spanned more than two decades. At Disney, Duerrstein used his talent in many diverse ways, developing his own unique style that is prevalent in his paintings and graphic work today. After leaving Disney Studios and inspired by contemporary artists such as Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and David Hockney, he has created many stylistic interpretations of Disney and Warner Bros. characters that are highly sought after by collectors world-wide. Linda Jones Enterprises is pleased to represent the unique paintings and original limited editions of Dick Duerrstein.

Witch Hazel is a giclée on canvas that is available in two sizes (24" x 36" and 16" x 24") in an edition of 50 examples signed by the artist.
